Now for the Tease....

"New York is not the same today. I've been back a couple times and I can still feel the pulse of a giant city beating just below the surface. The Big Apple still had a charm that no other city has. San Francisco is sunshine and smiles. Chicago is cold and tough, but New York City is the older sister that wants to party all night long. If you don't believe that, then go there and just listen. You'll feel that pulse. You'll hear that hum and hear the sounds of a continuous party with music somewhere and people laughing everywhere, and sirens singing an alarm, and lights to brighten any dark night, and you'll know then what I felt that very first night down in the Village. Once you live there you'll never be the same."
Near and Dear to My Heart...
This weeks book is one that tugs at my heart strings. As any of you that read my Booking through Thursday post last week would know, this book is written by my late Grandfather, Leland (Buck) Service. His book was published in mid to late 2008 and he passed away in March of 2009. I have, at many a juncture, tried to pick this book up and read it in its entirety but because of the emotions attached to it, I have failed. Even now as I write this, I can feel the tears falling down my cheeks and hitting the keyboard. I know that it might seem silly to a lot of you to cry over a book, but this is the only one we will ever see. An end of a legacy. There is no more of my Grandfather to see or hear or read, and for me it's about more than just this book. Sure we will always have memories, but those tend to fade the less we use them. The written word lasts long after it's Author is gone, and that's why this book is so important. This was chronicling a time in his life that I was never a part of. Seeing the man I considered a father figure, in a whole different light. Learning that he was fallible and just as lost as the rest of us. Being shaped into the man I grew up loving and adoring.
His humor, arrogance, intelligence, and overall confidence pour out of the pages and even if you think it's nothing special, I can hear him telling you that you are wrong.
"That is a damn good work of non fiction right there! I doubt you could do any better! Care to give it a whirl and prove me wrong? Yeah, I thought not."
I have decided to try and read the book all the way through, but I struggle with the idea that it could all be over once I turn the last page. A fight I will win once the time is right, but for now, a glimpse of whats to come, for me and a tease for you.
It will probably never make a best sellers list, it probably won't be in ebook form, and we obviously won't have any tours, but this will always be one of the best books I have ever read, and not just because I am biased. ;) Check it out sometime!

I am sorry for your loss, Melissa. I might not know how you feel about this book, but I do understand that this book is much more than just a book to you. It holds a lot of sentimental value because your Grandfather wrote it. I hope one day you do win and that you do finish the book, as I'm sure your review will be great. I'm adding this book to my TBR list. Like you said, it might not make the best sellers list or eBook format, but I'll know a little more about the person who wrote it and how it ended up in my hands. Happy blogging, hun :) Following you back

DeleteHi Melissa,
ReplyDeleteGreat teaser, and I'm also sorry for your loss. The voice of the book, the way he describes NYC, was just spot on. Love the part about "the older sister who wants to party all night long" :) Wonderful! I could feel the way your grandpa felt about it just from that one little snippet.
Hope you have a great week!
